songlines - the earth - the square meters - warumungu

This SOIL was collected together with Juppurrula - Junior Frank in the Warumungu Land around Tennant Creek.
Juppurrula is a young performance artist whose fame reaches beyond the Barkley region. Despite his youth, he has been given considerable responsibilities from the Aboriginal People around Tennant Creek. Aided by his high standing we excavated OCHRE SOIL used for body painting by the Aboriginal People at their ceremonies. The black picture was produced with wood charcoal from a fire pit nearby Nyinkka Nyunyu, a sacred site of the Warumungu in Tennant Creek.

We dug up the fifth SOIL in Karlu Karlu - the Devils Marbles - together with Yunbymba (Leslie Forster) the traditional owner of this land.
