The Stuart Highway crosses the Australian continent from Port Augusta in the South to Darwin in the North.
After three attempts the Scottish geometrician and explorer John McDouall Stuart discovered the route at the end of the 19th century. The road was completed in 1940 and has been completely surfaced with tarmac since the middle of the 1980s.
I have named this part of the SONGLINE project 'The White Line' because I am certain that the white man John Stuart crossed Australia using very old paths with the help of the Aboriginal people.
The current appearance of some of the ancient songline locations along the Stuart Highway is impressively documented in contemporary photographs at the Nyinkka Nyunyu cultural centre in Tennant Creek. The knowledge about many other songlines on this road maybe lost forever.
For this part of the project and with respect for the culture of the Aboriginal people, I dug SOIL from positions very close to the embankment of the road where the tarmac cuts into the land.
