Lapalala is a sanctuary for rhinoceroses in the Waterberg in the North of South Africa.
The excavating sites for this project were determined by the Black and White Rhinos of this wilderness themselves. The SOIL for the TERRAGRAPHICS came from places, which were recognizable by the different daily activities of particular animals. The titles of the TERRAGRAPHICS contain the date, the time, the site, the names of the Rhinos and their activities.
In the beginning of 1998, EG visited at the invitation of Clive Walker LAPALALA. For two days, with Hamish Rodgers, he followed the spoor of the Rhinos either by Landrover or on foot. They were supported by scouts, under Andries Mokwena, who showed them the freshest tracks and with whom they had radio contact the whole time.
On the first day the curious Punyane and her calf Ralachichi approached them while EG dug SOIL, and came as close as 7 m. At the end of the second day, while they were on foot, they moved to within 15 m of the biggest bull of this area, after they had been following his tracks since morning.
