Earth Art Work-Nº 438

Meadow

Republican River Valley

Jewell County

Kansas

17.7.2001 - 18:00

with the help of Darren Sudbeck and other

I quickly found the site not far from the Union Pacific Railroad. The search for the owner of the wooded meadow on the banks of Republican River, however, proved to be difficult.

Darren didn't know who the meadow belonged to but was of the opinion that it shouldn't be a problem to dig up some EARTH there. I was just about packing my stuff at the fence, when a passing truck driver asked me what I was doing there. When I was in the middle of explaining the project, another truck appeared in this before isolated spot and I started my speech over again. The discussion ended with a vague description of the way to George Handson's farm. After several more stops to ask for directions, I finally found the farm where I was greeted by two fiercely barking dogs. I sounded my horn, but since no one appeared, I resigned to waiting. After about one hour, an elderly lady appeared unexpectedly to tell me that George was working in the field. She vaguely indicated the direction, but I was not able to locate him. So, in the evening of this 100° Fahrenheit-day, I dug up the EARTH at the intended site without his specific permission.
