stromboli - the concept

STOMBOLI

Within the framework of my IMAGE OF THE EARTH project around the globe, VOLCANOES are of special importance. Through them and propelled by the element of fire, EARTH displays her untamed beauty.
They symbolize both fertility as well as destruction, as often directly experienced.
To date, I have created EARTH ART WORKS from twelve volcanoes on five continents.

In May 2019, I completed a project on STROMBOLI, Europe’s most active volcano.
Since ancient times, it is known to erupt regularly, branding its label as bonfire of the Mediterranean. I was able to collect samples at three prominent sites and even witness an eruption.

On Volcano, known in Roman mythology as the blacksmith’s shop of Vulcanus, the god of fire, I collected seven earths, dating from the island’s four eruption phases.

On the dead volcanic crater of Monte Pilato on Lipari, I collected shining white pumice, which was mined there until a few years ago.

On Mount Etna’s crater edge, I dug up a further SOIL sample.

At the summit of Vesuvius, I excavated the final VOLCANIC EARTH for this project.
