The Roche Mantel or Mont de Lans glacier, better known as the "Glacier des Deux Alpes", is operated by the Deux Alpes ski area. It is the largest glacier in Europe accessible during the summer season, with its numerous slopes and lifts, as well as an impressive and important snow park. The glacier is therefore used in summer, but also during the All Saints' Day holidays and in the winter season. All this contributes to a significant change in its condition and thus to faster melting. However, when the glacier is not open, the Deux Alpes operating company maintains its glacier (or its livelihood) as best it can by creating snow mounds and accumulations with its grooming equipment to limit the effects of melting and wind. An underground funicular was built under this glacier in 1989 to transport skiers and avoid these wind problems.
