LAPALALA
An artist book by Ekkeland Götze.
The EARTH for this project comes from LAPALALA,
a sanctuary for rhinoceroses in the Waterberg in the North of South Africa. The excavating sites for this project were determined by the Black and White Rhinos of this wilderness themselves. The SOIL samples came from places identified by the different daily activities of particular animals. The titles of the EARTH ART WORKS contain the date, the time, the site of excavation and the names of the individual Rhinos and their activities.
In the beginning of 1998, EG visited at the invitation of Clive Walker LAPALALA. For two days he followed the spoor of the Rhinos either by Landrover or on foot, thus realizing this project.
The book contains 19 Earth Art Works, which have been printed by EG himself on 300 gsm BFK Rives paperstock. They are illustrated with texts in English or German:
The scientific material about the Rhinos has been provided by Clive Walker, who also wrote the 'MISSION STATEMENT'.
The English descriptions of the Black and White Rhinos come from his book 'SIGNS of the WILD'.
'PRAISE SONG TO THE RHINOCEROS' and ■ BLESSED BY THE RHINOCEROS were written by the world-famous South African artist Credo Mutwa.
The German texts are excerpts from 'Brehms Tierleben' and 'Grzimeks Enzyklopädie - Säugetiere'.
All texts have been printed by EG himself on 100 gsm India paperstock, the titles on 21 gsm Japanese long fibre paper.
The book has been bound by EG, the cover is made of Rhino-Dung-Paper which has been handmade by Dan Saks of Johannesburg using Rhino dung from LAPALALA.
The title carries EG's hand signature and each Earth Art Work an embossed signature.
