The Jesuit missionary had heard of a settlement called Viggé, which in Cochimí means Land above the valley. Through heights and deep gorges he was guided by the natives from Loreto to different places, until after an exhausting journey, he was able to establish the original mission about 8 km north of the actual location. 
Father Pedro de Ugarte moved the mission to its actual location continuing his labour and development. From those times some walls remain of the original chapel, as well as a watering system nourished by a source called Biaundó in Cochimí. Here the missionaries cultivated the first vineyard on the peninsula. Surrounded by Basalt Mountains, the church was built between 1744 and 1758 by Father Miguel Barco, being considered the Pearl of the Missions of Baja California.

The Mission is located in an idylic and active settlement, well connected by a good road.
