Initially the mission was constructed 4 miles inland but was later rebuilt at a river mouth close to the beach, in search of better cultivating conditions. Later the mission was moved back to it’s original settling. In his work of evangelization Tamaral entered in conflict with the Pericués. The prohibition of polygamy, along with Nicolás Tamaral s´ martyrdom and the dying of the population, caused by the arrival of the Europeans, provoked a rebellion among the Pericues in 1734. By the end of the XVIII century the Pericúes population had been extinguished. 
From 1768 on, the mission was passed over to the Dominicans.

The current church was erected in 1840 to be rebuilt after the devastating hurricane of 1918.
