Misión de San José de Comondú

The Mission of San José de Comondú was founded in 1708 by the Jesuits Juan Maria de Salvatierra, Juan Ugarte and Julián Mayorga, in a river valley known as Comondú according to the Cochimiés.

The mission was abundantly provided for by the Visitas of San Ignacio and San Miguel, so that between 1754 and 1760 the missionaries managed to erect a big three nave church. Following Father`s Mayorga death, the remaining churchgoers were relocated to the mission de San Ignacio de Kadakaamán.

The mission`s ruins were removed in 1936. Today a chapel has been built on that ground, surrounded by the stones of the original construction.
